Functional Movement Assessments
The Functional Movement Screen- A simple and quantifiable method of evaluating basic movement.
Our workouts are not limited to the gym or the 3x/wk chunks we have scheduled into our already overfilled life. They consist of every movement we make throughout the day. And they happen within the space of our lives! Don`t spend endless, wasted hours at the gym. Run faster, jump farther, move easier by recognizing and eliminating your biomechanical flaws.
Experiencing 1st hand how your body works (or doesn't) is key. How can you become stronger when you aren't sure what your current limitations are? You've got to feel it!
The Functional Movement Screen is an innovative system used to evaluate movement pattern quality. Comprised of seven fundamental movement patterns that require a balance of mobility and stability, these fundamental movement patterns are designed to exaggerate your biomechanical limitations and highlight what needs to be strengthened or stabilized. STOP compensating! Move the way you are designed to.
Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage is the practiced of soft tissue manipulation, including muscles, tendons and ligaments, with the goal of accomplishing physical, functional, or psychological change.
Many of the therapeutic effects of massage recognized by personal and clinical experience over the years have been supported by scientific research. In addition to the commonly known benefits of relaxation, improved circulation, and relief for muscle tension, applications for therapeutic massage are evident in areas related to mental and emotional well-being, pregnancy, infant care, aging, and other special situations.

Prenatal Massage
Regular massage during your pregnancy has many wonderful benefits; during the first trimester it helps to reduce stress and fatigue, boosts energy and improves sleep. The second trimester sees greater, more rapid changes to your body casing increased muscle tension and discomfort. Massage can again help to decrease these symptoms and help accommodate your changing body through the second and continuing through the third trimesters. Throughout pregnancy increased circulation helps to decrease fluid retention and more importantly helps with increased cellular nutrition for you and your growing child within.
Prenatal massage is a key component of the Dr For Moms pregnancy program offered at Lifestyles Wellness Group.

Post Partum Massage
After your baby has arrived it is just as important to care for yourself as you did while you were pregnant. Massage can help you achieve your pre-baby form, relieve muscle aches and pains from new activities such as carrying or baby wearing and breastfeeding. It also continues to reduce stress and fatigue, boost energy and helps to reduce post partum symptoms.
Post partum massage is a key component of our complete pregnancy care program at Lifestyles Wellness Group

ACUPUNCTURE
WHAT IS IT?
Acupuncture is a method of promoting natural healing and improving function within the body. This is accomplished by inserting needles at very precise acupuncture points and may also include applying heat or electrical stimulation.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory includes channels of energy that run in regular patterns throughout the body and over its surface. These energy channels are called meridians and in TCM they are believed to be essential for nourishing the tissues and ensuring proper functioning of the body. An obstruction in the movement of energy along these meridian pathways is believed to be the cause of dysfunction and/or pain within the body. Acupuncture influences these meridians through needling of the appropriate acupuncture points to re-establish energy flow along the blocked meridian pathways, thus allowing healing to occur.
In recent years, acupuncture has begun to be much more widely accepted and practiced in the Western medical world and is often referred to as “medical acupuncture” when performed by non-TCM health care professionals. The modern scientific explanation for the success of acupuncture is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals act as natural pain killers and/or anti-inflammatories to decrease the sensation of pain and promote natural healing within the body.
What is the difference between an acupuncturist and a health care professional certified in acupuncture?
The term “acupuncturist” generally refers to someone who has completed extensive training in TCM, including acupuncture, as well as the use of Chinese herbal and other remedies. They will usually have the letters DTCM behind their name, identifying them as a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. With the increased acceptance of acupuncture into the Western medical world, as a result of it’s many benefits and positive results, many physical therapists, chiropractors, and medical doctors have sought additional training to become certified in acupuncture. However, they are generally not doctors of TCM and therefore are not called acupuncturists.
Nutritional Consulting
Holistic Nutrition:
Have you ever wondered why despite much progress in medicine, we’ve seen a marked increase of a long list of chronic illnesses which we have no real cures: diabetes, heart disease, allergies, asthma, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, obesity, cancer, inflammatory conditions, depression and other psychological disorders, just to name a few. What we do know is that our Western diet has changed dramatically in the past 50 years. Many people assume that the modern diet is perfectly adequate and that we get all the necessary vitamins and minerals from our food. Research shows that due to intensive farming and the use of chemicals and pesticides our food is not as nutrient- rich as it once was and that many of us are suffering deficiencies of nutrients. Studies are confirming that the foods we eat have a direct impact on our body, down to cellular and molecular levels. Sometimes, the effects of our diets may not be noticed for quite some time, and in the long term, can contribute to serious illnesses. Holistic Nutrition is the science that examines the link between the individual diet and their level of health. It combines food and supplements to encourage the body's natural detoxification process, rebalances any deficiencies and restores healthy digestion. This also includes understanding the healing properties of foods and how food choices affect the optimal function of every cell.
Holistic Nutritionist:
A Holistic Nutritionist is trained in natural nutrition and complementary health to educate and assist people about the health impacts and benefits of optimal nutrition. An RHN will assess your nutritional status according to your unique, individual needs. You will learn about health promotion, disease prevention and healing, and have a plan designed for you that will outline which nutrients you may be deficient in and what body systems need support and balancing. A Holistic Nutritionist also takes your lifestyle, exercise, habits, thought patterns and beliefs into consideration to assist you in changes to your diet and lifestyle. Environmental pollution, metal toxicity, micro-organism imbalance and food sensitivities are among other factors that are considered in constructing a nutritional program.
Nutritional Consultation
Before the consultation, you will be sent a Questionnaire which should be completed as fully and honestly as possible. You will be asked to complete a typical 3 day food diary. An extensive analysis of your eating habits and lifestyle will be conducted on your first visit. Your Nutritionist will then work to build a plan specifically designed for your goals and body needs. On your second visit, you will be given your new personalized nutrition plan, which includes the results of your analysis and provides insight into which of your body's organ systems are out of balance. This plan is designed for you, focused on healing and helping you achieve your own optimal health. A follow up visit is included 4-6 weeks later to assess your progress or to make any modifications in your diet and lifestyle plan.

Reflexology
While the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn’t until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as ‘zone therapy’. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.
In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person and not just the prevailing symptoms.
How can Reflexology help me?
Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.
Reactions to Reflexology
During and after a treatment, you may have physical or emotional reactions. Since reflexology encourages your body to rid itself of toxins, it is vital that you drink plenty of fresh water after a treatment, to flush theses toxins from the body. Any reactions should disappear within 24 hours.
Reactions during or after a treatment might include feeling sleepy, feeling energized and alert, needing to visit the toilet more frequently, a slight runny nose, increased perspiration, or shivering. These reactions are, if anything, a positive sign that the reflexology treatment is working to balance your body.
Everyone is different and you may not experience any noticeable reactions, yet the reflexology will have been a positive experience.
Reflexology is not at all ticklish and is not a painful experience, however if there are reflexes with energy blockages, they can be slightly uncomfortable until they have been properly worked and balanced.
Kinesio Taping
What is kinesiotape?
Kinesiotape is a hypoallergenic tape originally developed in Japan, where it has been used extensively since the early 1980’s. It was developed to provide outside assistance to aid in the normal function of tissues and thus promote more effective healing. It was officially introduced in North America in 1995, and is currently used by every professional sports team in Japan and by many professional teams in the U.S.A., Canada, South America, Europe, and other parts of Asia. That being said, the primary use for Kinesiotape is with non-athletes due to its many benefits. It is used extensively by physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists and other health care professionals. The gentleness of the tape and the methods of application allow individuals to wear the tape for several days per application, resulting in therapeutic benefits 24 hours a day while it is worn.
What does it do?
Kinesiotape has many beneficial properties, including the ability to:
Improve muscle function.
Increase lymphatic drainage.
Improve joint function.
Relieve pain.
Improve fascial function.
Stimulate the nervous and circulatory systems.
What can kinesiotape be used for?
Neck muscle tension
Shoulder pain/injuries
Back pain/injuries
Knee pain/injuries
Ankle/foot pain/injuries
Muscle imbalances
Joint instability/pain during pregnancy
Muscle, joint, and lactation support post-pregnancy
Paediatric conditions
Infant Torticollis
Does your baby always want to look in one direction?
Is your baby’s head always tipped to one side?
Does your baby have difficulty looking up when playing on his or her tummy?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your baby may have “torticollis”. “Torticollis” is a medical word for tightness and/or weakness of one of the neck muscles. If the neck muscles are involved, your baby will likely prefer to look in one direction and may tilt his or her head to one side. Our approach is to ensure that your baby has proper joint mobility as well as proper muscular function.
Dr. Hort will evaluate your baby to find out if there is true joint restriction contributing to the muscular dysfunction and limited movement of his or her neck. Once this is restored, your baby will have the ability to perform the normal movements and attain the correct head/neck position with the help of physical therapy. It is important that you see Lori, our physical therapist who will also perform a detailed evaluation of the condition and will teach you stretching and strengthening exercises for your baby. These exercises will be very important for correcting the problem with the neck muscles, and help prevent your baby from developing a flat area on his or her head.
Dr. Patti Hort
Lori Walker, PT
Infant Plagiocephaly
“Plagiocephaly” and “Brachycephaly” are the medical terms for flattening of a baby’s head. Since the “Back to Sleep” program began, the number of babies developing a flat spot on the head has increased significantly. In addition, the number of babies requiring treatment with a corrective helmet has also increased. However, if caught early enough, plagiocephaly and brachycephaly can be treated with proper positioning and early detection and treatment of any soft tissue or joint imbalances that may be contributing to your baby’s preference to keep their head in one position.
Flat areas on your baby’s head can be corrected through early identification and proper repositioning!

Yoga
Yoga has been around for centuries, originating in India. It has only recently begun to gain more popularity in the western world, mainly because of the physical and aesthetic benefits yoga can provide. The practice of yoga has been typically used to rejuvenate the body and prolong life. The Sanskrit translation of yoga is “yuj,” meaning to yoke or unite and it is this union of mind, body and spirit with the universe that makes up the core principles of yoga.
Yoga postures, or asanas, with the utilization of our breath create flexibility, strength and endurance. Many find that the physical benefits pale in comparison to the many mental benefits gained by practicing yoga. Yogic breathing can slow your heart rate, decrease perspiration, relax tense muscles and restore your sense of calm.
With the spine as the central focus, chiropractic and yoga work synergistically to realign the spine and alleviate pain from muscle imbalances and joint restrictions that are caused by our daily lives. Recent research has shown that yoga can also be beneficially for the following conditions:
• Anxiety
• Stress
• Headache
• Insomnia
• Chronic Back Pain
• Osteoporosis
• Flat Feet (pes planus)
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Custom Orthotics
Foot pain, back pain, knee pain?
Here's how the Footmaxx™ System works to alleviate all those aches and pain associated with foot-related problems.
You walk across a computerized force plate that is connected to a computer. This force plate or mat, has 960 electronic sensor points built into it.
As you walk, the force plate captures the motion and timing of your foot throughout the gait cycle. This data is analyzed by the computer to produce instant 2d and 3D graphic images of the pressures under your feet that you can see on the screen. The same information is then sent to Footmaxx™ via modem where sophisticated diagnostic software specifies the prescription for your custom orthotics and can generate a comprehensive gait and pressure analysis.
There is a secret to making orthotics that give you exactly the right correction accurate measurements of the way you walk. In the past, doctors relied on plaster of foam casts to get a static impression of the feet. However, these cast record only the shape of the foot at rest not bearing any weight.
The Footmaxx™ System helps your practitioner analyze your gait and prescribe the proper orthotics to help your feet function better. Footmaxx™ orthotics are thin and light weight. They fit easily and discreetly into your existing footwear. You can wear your most stylish shoes, and still get the proper support and correction from Footmaxx™ Orthotics. Footmaxx™ orthotics provide superior control and correction for foot and gait abnormalities. Custom made especially for you, Footmaxx™ orthotics will correct and improve the way your feet strike the ground, enhancing your natural movement and helping your feet move more efficiently.
